The eco-system of Palisander vineyard

The chickens at Palisander play a crucial role in our vineyard’s ecosystem. We let the chickens forage and peck beneath the vines and between rows, helping to control pests. Their diligent foraging transforms what nature offers into fertiliser, improving soil health and vine vitality. Tasmania’s separation from the mainland means there’s no threat from foxes, allowing our Palisander hens (and a couple of rowdy roosters!) to roam freely during the day and at dusk.

We embrace a traditional and sustainable agricultural approach by integrating chickens, sheep and bees into our farming methods. While it demands a great deal of commitment and knowledge to raise the animals in a way that improves their well-being, having them on the property is also highly enjoyable, as well as allowing us access to the best eggs!
